What to look for in 1991 BMW 525i...owner says it runs great but needs battery and water pump. I've had to replace a water pump when the timing belt went in a Camry. Wondering what else to look for? It has a lot of rust under doors and rear driver's side

sounds like you are looking
sounds like you are looking to buy this car. with rust comes ele. problems. you say it needs a batt., does it have enogh power to start and test drive car. if not bring a batt. with you to test drive it, also fill the cooling system befor test drive and after check for coolant leaks. one mans water pump may be anothers head gasket, or worse. i would never buy a used car with out a test drive. wile test driving if you feel, smell, hear, see something that is out of the ordinary, ask owner about it. as for rust, some states are harh on rust holes when it comes to an insp. sticker.
I'm driving it today and will
I'm driving it today and will find out more information. I've also talked to a foreign car mechanic and he says BMW's are quite easy to work on, parts are plentiful and they have a pretty good service record. He likes them better than a Mercedes I am looking at that is a 1989.
I believe the BMW owners said they replaced the transmission in the 1991 525i. The mechanic says he's never dealt with it and has never heard of one being replaced so it sounds like they may have put in a new filter and fluid. I once had a car that when I did that it worked for a few more months and then finally died. Is this common? How much is a tranny replacement?
I know someone who has a Mercedes...not sure of the model or year and that is what he needs is a transmission. But he bought the car really cheap yet has been sitting for several months. So where do you go?
Thanks for your comments on these troubling questions!
sometimes a good deal to one
sometimes a good deal to one guy is not so good to another. a test drive and money back 30 day guarantee if what is stated is not correct. unless you just have to have it and the price is way below book value i don't think i would gamble.
not sure of the cost for sure
not sure of the cost for sure but, i'd say $1000.00 to $1800.00,rebuild "depending on hard parts" and $3000.00 TO $4000.00 for a replacement. i donn't go any where, 3rd gen. machanic. my dad allways told me, learn eletronics and automatic transmissions and you will allways be in demand. he was right, but, doctors make a s*#! load of more money. get back to us, mws919
