You don't have to use
You don't have to use premium. However combustion rate (timing) can become affected over a longer period of time. Resulting in emission issues, misfire, dirty fuel system.
If you are going to use a lower grade gasoline make sure to take some extra steps in keeping the fuel system as clean as possible, like keeping the injectors clean, and VW approved fuel additives.
