1.Release the fuel system pressure.
2.Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3.Raise and safely support the vehicle securely on jackstands.
4.Remove the fuel tank; refer to the procedure outlined in this section.
5.If equipped with a steel fuel tank:
A.Remove all dirt from the area of the sender.
B.Turn the locking ring counterclockwise to remove it. There is a wrench designed for this purpose. If the wrench is not available, loosen the locking ring by placing a wood dowel against the tabs on the locking ring and carefully hammer it loose. Never use a metal drift!
C.Lift out the fuel pump and sending unit. Discard the gasket.

CAUTION
Use of a metal drift may result in sparks which could cause an explosion!

6.If equipped with a plastic fuel tank:
A.Remove all dirt from the area of the sender.
B.Turn the locking ring counterclockwise to remove it. A band-type oil filter wrench is ideal for this purpose. Lift out the fuel pump and sending unit. Discard the gasket.

To install:

7.Place a new gasket in position in the groove in the tank.
8.Place the sending unit/fuel pump assembly in the tank, indexing the tabs with the slots in the tank. Make sure the gasket stays in place.
9.Hold the assembly in place and position the locking ring.
10.On steel tanks, turn the locking ring clockwise until the stop is against the retainer ring tab.
11.On plastic tanks, turn the retaining ring clockwise until hand-tight, then torque it 40-55 ft. lbs.
12.Make sure the gasket is still in place.
13.Connect the fuel lines and wiring.
14.Install the tank as outlined in this section.
